If you are upset with Mozilla for what they did when they defenestrated (a fancy word meaning "thrown out of the window") Brendan Eich for his supposed ThoughtCrime, then don't get angry -- get even! After all, they acquiesced to a witchhunt for a principled religious stand by Mr. Eich five years ago on Proposition 8, which defined marriage as being between one man and one woman. Over half of California voted with Mr. Eich on Prop 8. An attack on Mr. Eich is, in essence, an attack on the views of all of his fellow Californians who voted similarly. Each of us is, in some fashion, Brendan Eich, and each of us is vulnerable to the same sort of attack. We no longer need to wonder if such an attack will come -- it's when it will come.
Without going further into politics, if you don't like what Mozilla has done, what can you do to show your displeasure? Getting even does not mean violence; we are not people of violence, we are people of principle.
Getting Even means punishing Mozilla by either getting rid of Firefox (their flagship product) or neutering it. By doing either, you will be depriving the Mozilla Foundation of a method whereby they use you to provide nearly 90% of their income. Getting rid of Firefox involves a complex set of steps to export your bookmarks and passwords and to import them into your chosen new browser. Neutering Firefox is so much easier. So, without further ado...
To really send the message to Google as well, make some other search provider, such as https://duckduckgo.com/ your Firefox search provider by building it a bookmark and using it. As good as Google is, they are the main source of Mozilla’s income, and so you want to cease using them while using Firefox until the message has been sent.
For those of you who love Google as I do for the quality of its search results, I suggest that you install an alternate browser just for Google searches, so no possible revenue stream reaches Mr. Eich's tormentors that way. I’m using Midori -- which is based on the Webkit engine rather than Mozilla's Gecko engine. This lets me search Google without sending a dime to Mozilla. In addition, having a separate browser aids you in avoiding Google-itis, in which your gmail account becomes a nexus for knowing your habits. If you don't link your alternate browser to your Gmail account, you have a level of privacy which you would otherwise lack.
Hopefully, the above was helpful. Have a nice day.
